sulphur and phosphorus are constituents of many proteins.
Mineral elements account for approximately 4% of body weight. Some, such as calcium and phosphorus, are present in the body in relatively large amount and are known as major minerals or macro minerals, where as other occur in very small quantities and are known as trace minerals.
FUNCTIONS OF MINERALS
Minerals have three main functions in the body.
- Calcium, phosphorous and magnesium are constituents of bones and teeth.
- Some elements are present as soluble salts which help to control the composition of body fluids. These include potassium and magnesium present inside body cells and sodium and chlorine in the fluid outside the cells.
- Many of the trace elements are concerned in enzyme system in the body.
CALCIUM
- Sources are liver, kidney, egg yolk, cereals, and potatoes.
- The human body contains about 4g of iron.
- The majority of iron occurs in hemoglobin, a red pigment present in the red blood corpuscles.
- It is also find in myoglobin, a protein which acts as an oxygen carrier in the muscles.
- A deficiency of iron cause anemia.
SODIUM AND CHLORINE
- Mainly eaten in a form of common salt.
- They are present as ions in the fluid surrounding body cells and are essential in the regulation of the water content of the body.
- Sources are cereals, vegetables, seafish, seaweed and milk.
